Tram Travellers Project: Pupils to Sing on the Tram in Nottingham

Children singing on tramOn the morning of Wednesday 23rd June, Rosslyn Park Primary school pupils will be singing on some of the trams in Nottingham. The pupils have been studying the history of trams in Nottingham as part of “Tram Travellers” – a Heritage Lottery funded project which is being run by Groundwork Greater Nottingham.

As part of their 8 week programme, Rosslyn Park Primary school pupils have worked with local performance artist Ruth Dawes, to create some songs which have been inspired by their research into the history of trams in Nottingham. Now Year 5 pupils will be riding on the modern tram network and singing their songs to other passengers with their teacher Kelly Wathall.

Children singing on steps of Nottingham Council HouseTracey Lloyd, Tram Travellers Project Officer for Groundwork said: “The children have really enjoyed finding out about the history of trams and how their area has changed since trams first came to Nottingham. They have created these songs as a novel way of reviewing what they have learned and have been looking forward to singing them on the tram.”

Rosslyn Park is the last of 11 schools that have benefitted from this Heritage Lottery Funded project since 2008. The historical information the pupils have collected will go on display from October 12th at Brewhouse Yard Museum, along with examples of the artwork that they have produced. A celebration booklet and teacher's pack will also be produced and distributed to local schools and other interested groups, and we are still keen to hear from anyone who remembers the old trams to include their reminiscences in the pack.

If anyone has any memories, photos or memorabilia of Nottingham trams that they would like to share with the project, they should contact Tracey Lloyd or Martin Curtis at Groundwork Greater Nottingham on 0115 9788212.
