This former mining town, a short tram ride from Nottingham, has a strong industrial, cultural and social heritage.

Lord ByronThe infamous poet Lord Byron, grew up at the nearby Newstead Abbey and now lies in the churchyard of St Mary Magdalene Church, where there is a Sensory Garden and stained glass window collection by C.E. Kempe.

Byron’s spirit still lives on, with tram 205, the 400 seat Byron Cinema and a two week International festival held each July, all named after him.

If you are feeling energetic there is a Leisure Centre with swimming pool, fitness centre and climbing wall, or take a stroll at the nearby Mill Lakes (see our tram walk).

Events worth seeing are the Hucknall Carnival in December, when the Christmas Lights are turned on, the annual Beer Festival in February and Sports Festival in June.
