Line One is 14km long, 10km of which runs alongside the Robin Hood railway line between Hucknall in the north and Wilkinson Street Park and Ride, and on a disused freight line which takes the system to a Park and Ride at Phoenix Park near the M1 (junction 26). On the way it serves Park and Rides at Hucknall and Moor Bridge and Bulwell railway station, bus station and town centre.

The remaining 4km runs on streets between Hyson Green and Nottingham railway station through the heart of the city and its popular shopping, leisure and tourism attractions.

The Hyson Green part of the route forms a loop with citybound trams taking Radford Road (with stops for the shopping area and the market) and northbound trams taking the residential Noel Street. The loop comes back together at Gregory Boulevard where NET runs through a three-platform stop at the Forest - home to Nottingham's famous Goose Fair and one of six tram Park and Ride sites.

The route continues towards the city and serves the High School stop and the nearby Arboretum before entering the Nottingham Trent University's city centre campus with a tramstop in the heart of a pedestrian-friendly area. The next stop is at the side of the Theatre Royal/Royal Concert Hall and close to the Cornerhouse entertainment complex and within walking distance of the Victoria Shopping Centre and other shops and amenities.

Passing down Market Street the tram enters the central Old Market Square, the 'front room' of Nottingham with its imposing Council House and surrounding shops, bars and restaurants. Continuing up Victoria Street the tram serves the rejuvenated Lace Market - now home to the National Ice Centre amongst other attractions.

NET then runs onto a viaduct where a tram stop is planned for the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre proposed extension. Line One terminates at Station Street, where there is a direct connecting footbridge to the main line Railway Station. A lift and stairs are also provided going down to ground level.
