Special Birthday Surprise For Tram Fan
27 January 2017
Local tram fan, Karen Dening, received a special birthday surprise last week thanks to Nottingham’s tram network.

Organised by her husband Tom Dening, with the help of NET’s Customer Service team, Karen celebrated her 60th birthday in style as she toured the tram depot at Wilkinson Street.

After meeting the operational team in the control room and visiting the maintenance sheds, Karen and Tom even got to have a go at driving a tram along some of the tracks in the depot.

Karen, who works as Head of Research and Evaluation for Admiral Nursing at Dementia UK, explained: “I’ve always had a fascination with anything mechanical, particularly large vehicles like trains or trams.

“Having the opportunity to drive a tram was a wish come true and it was fantastic to take a look behind the scenes and see how the network operates.”

Tom, a Professor of Dementia at Nottingham University, added: “Karen was truly surprised by it all and we both really enjoyed our trip. The NET team were really helpful and informative, making sure we felt most welcome.”

In return for the tour, Tom made a £100 donation to the tram operator’s chosen charity, When You Wish Upon A Star.

NET’s Deputy Operations Manager, Darren Smith said: “We were very pleased to help make Karen’s birthday extra special and her enthusiasm for trams was great to see.”
