TEMPERATURES across the UK are soaring this week, with Nottingham forecasted to reach levels of up to 35°C. The extreme weather can impact the trams themselves as well as the infrastructure across the wider network. To prepare for the days ahead, Nottingham Express Transit (NET) has issued an important update for anyone planning to use the city’s tram network.
Sarah Turner, managing director at NET, said:
“Following the Amber and Red hot weather warnings issued by the Met Office, we’d like to encourage all tram users to allow a little extra time before travelling with us. Over the next few days, the temperatures are expected to reach unprecedented and record-breaking levels. Such extreme, high temperatures can impact our trams, our infrastructure and our service, which could in turn impact journeys.
“The safety of all our passengers and staff is always a priority for us, so during the upcoming heatwave, our team will be working each day to assess the impact of the weather on our network to ensure we can run services safely and effectively. We’ll share any updates on our website and social media channels, so we’d encourage people to check these before travelling.
“Once on the tram, we ask people to please alight and board the tram as quickly and safely as possible, and move down the cab so there is plenty of room for other people. This ensures we can keep our doors closed and minimises how much hot air enters the tram, keeping it cooler for everyone.
“Beyond this, we urge people to take extra measures to keep themselves safe when travelling on hot weather days, such as staying hydrated and having water with them, wearing lighter or loose-fitting clothes and carrying a portable fan if they can. If you feel unwell, refrain from boarding the tram and if you need assistance, you can speak to our team via the customer help points located on each platform.
“Over the coming days, if you do notice that a passenger is looking unwell, or something doesn’t look right on our network, please let our team know as soon as possible. We’re always available on WhatsApp on 0115 8246060, or you can use our platform help points.
“We’d like to thank our customers and our staff for their cooperation over the next few days as we all navigate this extreme and exceptional hot weather.”
