Tram safety
Trams are one of the safest ways to get around. Here in Nottingham, we want to make sure every journey stays safe, smooth, and stress-free.
Safety is our upmost priority. Here’s how we can all play a part in keeping our tram network safe and sound.

Stay aware, stay safe
- Be aware of your surroundings. We know it’s tempting to scroll or pop your headphones in, but it’s important to stay alert. Trams are quiet and being distracted by your phone or music could mean you miss them approaching.
- Cross with care. Always use the pedestrian crossing points and remember to look both ways - one tram can sometimes hide another coming in the opposite direction.
- Keep children safe. Don’t let children play on platforms or tracks and keep children close to you.

Tram stops and platforms
- Keep clear of tram lines and platform edges. Trams are wider than the tracks, so give them plenty of space as they pass.
- No rushing, no pushing. Let passengers off before boarding and stand back from the edge until it’s your turn.
- Respect reserved seating. Priority seats are there for people who need them most - let’s be kind and considerate.
- Mind the doors. Flashing lights and an alarm will sound when the doors are closing - don’t board at the last second. Wait for the next tram - they’re very regular!

Help when you need it
- Every tram and stop is fitted with Help Points - a direct line to our team, ready to help you if something doesn’t feel right. Our trams are all numbered, being able to give the number to us will help us quickly identify the tram.
- If you become separated from your child, use the Help Point to alert us and our team (alongside our network-wide CCTV) will do everything to reunite you as quickly as possible. It’s helpful to teach children to recognise and use Help Points too.
If you have any issues or concerns you can get in touch via WhatsApp on 0115 824 6060

For drivers and cyclists
- Don’t block the tramway. Trams can’t steer around obstacles like cars can and tracks can get slippery when wet.
- Always observe traffic signals and lane signs. They are important for your safety, and NEVER enter tram only lanes.
- Always obey level crossing and road signals. Level crossings can activate for trams, trains or both, don’t ever to try to beat the barriers – it’s dangerous.
- Cyclists, give trams space. Never try to hold on to a moving tram and watch out for tram lines that can be slippery, especially in wet conditions.
Anti-social behaviour? Not on our watch.
- We work closely with local police, and our network is covered by CCTV. If you see something suspicious, please report it using a Help Point, our WhatsApp number or if an emergency, by letting the police know.
- Actions like placing objects on the rails, damaging equipment, or throwing things at trams are not just dangerous — they’re criminal offences.
