Travel Safety

We're safe together
These tips are provided to help you travel safely and comfortably on our trams.

Always be aware when travelling around the tram network. Distractions like mobile phones and headphones can put you at risk. Make sure that you can clearly see and hear trams approaching.

Always use pedestrian crossing points, observe tram signs and look both ways before crossing. Sometimes one tram can hide another travelling in the opposite direction.

Stand well clear of the tram lines - trams are wider than the tracks, be sure to leave them plenty of room as they approach. Also remember to stay well clear of the platform’s edge when standing at a tram stop

Always observe traffic signals, traffic signals and lane signs are there for your safety and must be obeyed. NEVER enter tram only lanes.

Always observe and obey the level crossing and road signals. Level crossings can activate for trams, trains or both. Never gamble - don’t try to beat the barriers!

Flashing lights and audible alarms will sound when the doors are closing. For safety purposes passengers should not attempt to board as the doors will continue to close until an obstruction is detected. All passengers are required to be ready to board at a platform, if not, you will be required to wait for the next tram.

Some seats are reserved. Please ensure they’re free for the use of less able passengers. Observe priority seating and please give up your seat if someone needs it more than you do. Buggies, wheelchairs and mobility scooters should be positioned carefully.


Our help point buttons – at all our stops and on all our trams – are designed to provide a direct link to our staff who are there to provide support and advice should you need it.

If on or near a tram, keep hold or keep close.  By keeping hold of your child when on or around the trams no problems should arise but if you do become separated.… Don’t panic – help is on hand.

If on the tram, use a help point to inform the driver.  We will stop the tram as soon as it is safe to do so. On some sections of our network the driver may have to travel to the next stop but our control room staff will help reunite you as soon as possible

Finally, please teach children how to use the Help Points should they need assistance when travelling on our trams. Our control staff will monitor them using our CCTV system and send immediate assistance if required.

Take care, be aware

Walking near tram lines

Our trams run on metal tracks and although in public areas they are embedded into the ground, the metal can become slippery, especially when wet. As with any other traffic, when crossing tracks always be aware of trams and other road users. Our drivers always sound the bell before they move away from a stop to let you know and always travel at low speeds in pedestrian areas but trams can take longer to stop. Whenever possible use designated crossings and make sure you're not hidden by objects or traffic. Please never attempt to touch the overhead lines, these are live at all times.

Trams travel at low speeds in heavily pedestrianised areas, but can take longer to stop than you might expect. The driver will sound the horn when necessary to warn of the tram’s approach. Remember, trams are wider than the tracks. Keep small children close to you at all times.

If you are driving

Please don't obstruct the tramway - we can't scoot round you like a car, and avoid driving directly on the tracks, particularly at speed as they can get slippery, especially when wet. Remember to always drive to the highway regulations which apply to you (trams have different signalling systems to those of cars - even on shared sections).

Park & Ride

Find your nearest Park & Ride

Open 7 days a week, our sites are cleaned daily and patrolled by staff as well as monitored by CCTV. Park Mark approval means those sites have met the national standard for UK car parks that have low crime and measures in place to ensure the safety of people and vehicles.

There are disabled and parent and child spaces close by and cycle hubs and electric vehicle charging points at some sites.

Our tram service operates a "turn up and go" service, with trams from every 7 minutes during the week (every 3 minutes within the City Centre) and from every 10 minutes at weekends and bank holidays.  Displays at every stop will let you know when the next tram is due to arrive.
