In line with new government guidance, the wearing of face coverings will be mandatory on Nottingham’s tram network from today (June 15).
The new rules cover all forms of public transport and have been introduced by the government following the latest scientific advice that says face coverings can help reduce the chance of infecting others.
The coverings required to travel on NET can be simple cloth coverings that completely cover the nose and mouth. Further guidance can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/how-to-wear-and-make-a-cloth-face-covering/how-to-wear-and-make-a-cloth-face-covering.
Mike Mabey, Head of Operations, explained: “Throughout the pandemic, it’s been heartening to see the vast majority of customers complying with the restrictions put in place to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.
“As we start to see the tram get busier, it’s particularly important people follow this latest instruction alongside other advice such as maintaining social distancing whenever possible and washing their hands as often as they can.”
The latest rules cover all trams and enclosed areas of the network, and members of the NET team will be taking an educational approach to their implementation.
“We’re doing all we can to make people aware of the latest guidance, including providing information at tram stops, online and through our social media channels,”
Mike said. “Should anyone fail to comply we’ll treat the matter as we would any other incident of anti-social behaviour, including reporting the matter to the police and sharing CCTV footage with them if necessary,” he added.
Some people may not be able to wear a face covering, for example young children and people with breathing difficulties and more information on this is also available on the Government’s website (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-safer-travel-guidance-for-passengers).
In addition to the new instructions on face coverings, the following guidance also remains in place:
