Nottingham’s tram network is stepping up measures to ensure the continued safety of customers and employees as some coronavirus restrictions are eased.
While the advice remains to avoid using public transport if possible, NET expects some increase in customer numbers as more people return to work.
Mike Mabey, Head of Operations, explained: “Throughout the pandemic, the way we deliver services – so vital to many key workers – has been under constant review, with measures introduced in line with the most up-to-date government guidance.
“As we enter the next phase of the pandemic, further steps are now being taken across the network, including the introduction of new cleaning teams stationed at our four termini, and additional cleaning at other key locations. This will ensure that frequently touched surfaces onboard each tram, including handrails, can be disinfected at the end of every trip.”
“High visibility markings at stops and onboard trams are also being installed to help customers to maintain safe social distancing, alongside the roll-out of eye-catching posters offering further advice for customers.”
The latest measures complement processes already in place to help reduce the risk of spreading the virus, including drivers halting at all stops and automatically opening doors so that customers don’t have to touch the stop request bell or door-opening buttons.
“Naturally, due to social distancing, tram capacity has been greatly reduced, so we would ask customers to help us to help them by travelling outside peak times if possible and always follow instructions on where to sit or stand,” Mike said.
“We’re also urging them to pay for their travel in advance, either online or by using the NETGO app, and to wear a face covering when using the network.”

“Of course, the wellbeing of customers and staff remains our overriding priority, and we’ll continue to respond appropriately to any government guidance updates,” he added.
