Special Award For Mike’s Contribution To Tram Success

A leading member of the NET team has received a prestigious Judges’ Special Award at an event celebrating excellence in light rail.

Mike Mabey’s contribution to the undoubted success of Nottingham’s tram network, and his commitment to the wider tram sector, was recognised at the Global Light Rail Awards in London this week.

Currently Head of Operations, Mike is set to retire at the end of October following a distinguished career that spans 30 years in light rail. After rising through the ranks at Manchester Metrolink, following service in the Armed Forces with the Royal Engineers, he moved to Nottingham in 2014 ahead of a major extension project that saw the opening of new lines to Clifton South and Toton Lane.

Paul Robinson, the tram operator’s Director and General Manager, commented: “Mike has been a real asset to NET, bringing a wealth of experience that was invaluable as the network expanded.

“He quickly became a pivotal member of the Senior Management team, always there to support his colleagues whilst leading from the front. Widely respected throughout the sector, as well as here in Nottingham, Mike thoroughly deserves this recognition, and we will all miss him when he retires.”

Alongside his contribution to NET’s success Mike has also played a leading role in sharing best practice across the light rail sector, contributing to the vital work of the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board and the sector’s representative organisation, UKTram.

“As the testimonials on the night reflected, his sense of humour and generosity of spirit have always shone through alongside his exceptional professionalism,” Paul added.

On receiving the accolade, Mike said: “I can’t believe how fast 30 years has passed, but I’ve met some fantastic people along the way. I would like to thank them all for their support over the years, and I’m also grateful to colleagues past and present for nominating me for this award.”

The annual Global Light Rail Awards celebrate excellence across the sector, with awards and commendations presented in a diverse range of categories.

In addition to Mike’s award, NET also celebrated success in a Project of the Year category, where it was ‘Highly Commended’ for completing complex engineering work months ahead of original plans – ensuring the tram could play its part in the city’s post-pandemic recovery.

The project to replace tracks in the historic Lace Market area of the city – including what is believed to be one of the sharpest curves on any UK tram system – was successfully completed on May 11, in time for the lifting of Covid restrictions.
