Infrastructure boost for tram network

Summer engineering works will see major upgrades to Nottingham’s tram network, and plans are being put into place to help keep customers moving while tracks and points are being replaced around The Forest stop.

From Friday, August 18, until Thursday, August 31 (inclusive), trams will be unable to operate between Wilkinson Street and Old Market Square as part of planned infrastructure renewals that are vital for the safety and reliability of future tram services.

This is the first time tracks on this section of the line have been replaced since it opened in 2004, and during the works a dedicated shuttle bus will be in operation between the two stops until full tram services resume on Friday, September 1.

Trevor Stocker, NET Head of Operations, explained: “This major project has been timed to coincide with what is traditionally the quietest time of year for the tramway, when schools, colleges and universities are closed for the summer and many commuters are on holiday.

“However, we appreciate that many people will still rely on us to get out and about during this time, and we’re putting in place a range of measures to minimise inconvenience for customers and to help them complete their journeys.

“Alongside the dedicated shuttle bus, additional members of the NET Customer Experience team will be on hand across the network to offer travel advice to customers, and local bus services will also be accepting tram tickets.”

The replacement bus will operate every ten minutes and will be timed to connect with the rest of the tram network, which will run to an amended timetable. It will pick up and drop off customers at Wilkinson Street and on Market Street, just off Old Market Square.

“Although all stops between Wilkinson Street and Old Market Square will be closed for the duration of the works, the bus will continue to serve key locations on this section of the network. For example, the bus will stop just outside the entrance to The Forest Park and Ride, and further details about the route can be found on the NET website, at tram stops, and by following our social media channels,” Trevor said.

“All customers are advised to allow extra time for their journey, especially those travelling between the city centre and Hucknall and Phoenix Park, and we would like to thank customers in advance for their patience and understanding,” he added.
